• Our Firm's Resolute Commitment to Fostering an Atmosphere of Diversity in the Workplace

    Overview

The diversity initiatives that have been put in place by the management at Simon, Bennett, Robbins, Oppenheim, & Taft have been crafted to attract, cultivate, and advance the most talented attorneys, regardless of their race, sexual orientation, age, religion, gender, sexual preference, disability status, or any other factor.

    Approach

The firm's approach to diversity is one we believe is distinct and one in which we take great pride. It is based on a resolute belief that we each are personally accountable for achieving success in this important pursuit. We strive to provide our personnel with the appropriate training and tools to increase their awareness and understanding of individual differences and why they matter.

    Our Culture

The management at Simon, Bennett, Robbins, Oppenheim, & Taft wants the actions of every employee to contribute to a culture of inclusivity and high-performance. It is only when there is a universal feeling and belief that employees from varying backgrounds bring unique life-experiences and viewpoints to our office that we can truly achieve the greatest levels of justice for our clients.

    Openness

Our employees are encouraged to voice any concerns about the workplace environment at SBROT to either their direct supervisor or one of the senior partners. We always treat every concern regarding human resource matters with the utmost level of seriousness and prompt attention.

  • We Believe in Treating Every Client With the Same Courtesy, Professionalism, Dedication, and Commitment

    Courtesy

It is the hope of the senior partners at Simon, Bennett, Robbins, Oppenheim, & Taft that every employee, from those working in our mail room and as part of our janitorial staff, all the way up through mid- and upper-level management, treats every client with a level of courtesy that is beyond reproach. Quite simply, we want to extend to our clients the very same manners as we'd like to receive in return.

    Professionalism

We never want the lines between our personal lives and our professional ones to intersect. We know that every single thing about our employees matters -- how they dress, how they speak, their punctuality, and their demeanor.

    Dedication

When you become a client of ours, we want to make you feel as if yours is the only case at the firm. Naturally, our attorneys may have upward of several hundred -- or at times, even several thousand -- cases on their desks. But that is never an excuse for making a client feel like a number. Every client is our most important one.

    Commitment

Our partners and human resources personnel carefully screen every applicant for employment at the firm for a sense of how committed they will be to their work. We want employees willing and capable of making a long-lasting emotional investment in SBROT. Without a deep and binding passion, no one is capable of doing a superior job, and that's something we simply will not accept.

  • History of Our Firm: From Humble Beginnings to Modest Growth through International Expansion

    Founding

Our five name partners -- Mike Simon, Thomas Bennett, Jerry Robbins, Peter Oppenheim, and Oliver Taft -- incorporated the firm on June 2, 1939 in a tiny, three-room apartment on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. With a client list that contained all of three names, the group set out to make its mark in the legal community on the belief that hard work and perseverance would yield a successful practice. Within two years, the firm cracked 500 clients and more than 10,000 billable hours.

    Marks of Success

Whereas the group began strictly representing clients in the realm of white-collar criminal defense, today, there is no area of law in which the firm does not have at least one attorney with decades of experience.

    Expansion

With more than three dozen employees, the firm moved from the Lower East Side of Manhattan to a midtown penthouse in 1944. The space originally had 5,490 square feet, but after three renovations, it grew to more than 20,000 square feet, spread over the top three floors. With satellite offices in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Norwalk, Conn., and the Upper East Side, the firm now boasts six convenient locations.

    Our Future

The firm placed its first advertisement on a billboard along the FDR Highway in 1948 and today has a marketing budget in the millions. With plans to expand into Toronto and Mexico City, the firm expects to topple the 6,000-employee mark by 2014. Look for our television commercial during Super Bowl XVIII on FOX next February.
